There are seven species of bears that remain on the Earth today. While they are all similar in basic ways, there are enough differences for them to each have their own category as well as name. Learning more about these different bear species is very interesting. It can also help you to identify what you are looking at should you see one in the wild or at your local zoo.

The smallest bear in the world is the Malayan Sun Bear. Don’t let that size fool you though as they are also classified as the most violent of all in the world. Why they are more aggressive than others isn’t fully known. In fact, there is very little research out there about the behavior of this particular bear. Many experts hope to be able to learn more about it in the near future.

The Sloth Bear is definitely very different in appearance and behavior from the rest of the species. It has very long fur and longer claws. It also walks like a Sloth instead of like a bear. These types of bears live in groups instead of alone which is very different in terms of behavior of the species.

The American Black Bear is the most common one found in all of North America. It is also the smallest in that particular region. These are non aggressive bears but they are definitely curious. They tend to get a taste of human foods, especially sweets and then they want more of them. It can be hard to get them to stay in their given location once they have identified that type of food around them.

The Grizzly Bear is the biggest and most powerful of them all. This particular bear though is in grave danger of becoming extinct. Even with many programs in place to protect it time is running out.

Polar Bear anyone can easily identify a Polar Bear due to the white coloring. They are very large and powerful animals. The Polar Bear lives in the coldest areas of the world where very few other animals are able to survive.

Brown Bears are often confused with Grizzly Bears as they do have a very strong resemblance to each other. They are often very calm in nature though even though they live in areas where people continue to move in and to explore.

All of these bear species are very interesting to learn more about. As you find out facts for each one you will be able to tell them apart. You will also develop a new appreciation for them. The role of bears in our society are often overshadowed by myths. Learning the truth about them can change the way you happen to view them yourself.

Make sure you get your information from reliable sources though. Too much of the information out there about bears is biased. It can give you the impression that these are brutal predators with a craving for humans. However, that isn’t what they are all about. Instead they are amazing animals doing all they can to survive.

There are already some species of bears not mentioned here because they have become extinct. Many of those remaining are in jeopardy as well. Their numbers are low due to hunting and the destruction of their natural habitat. As you learn about the different species of bears you should also find out what you can do to help protect them.
